The Future of Cybersecurity in Asia Pacific and Japan

Cybersecurity workers face unique stressors and constant pressure due to the evolving nature of threats. This environment significantly increases their risk of burnout, leading to slower incident response times.

To understand how burnout and fatigue impact employees and their organisations, cybersecurity service provider Sophos commissioned Tech Research Asia (TRA) to conduct a survey focusing primarily on cybersecurity burnout and fatigue in Asia Pacific and Japan.

The survey included a substantial quantitative component, capturing responses from 919 companies across Australia (204), India (202), Japan (204), Malaysia (104), the Philippines (103), and Singapore (102).

The survey revealed that the frequency of attacks, alert fatigue, internal struggles with education and training, and the growing demands from boards and senior management teams are undermining cybersecurity and IT professionals’ ability to maintain a strong security posture.

Burnout, which affects almost all aspects of cybersecurity operations, has notably increased. This leads to reduced focus, higher vulnerability, and increased employee turnover, exacerbated by limited resources, executive pressure, and the repetitive nature of some cybersecurity roles.

As it is crucial to understand these challenges to develop an effective, tested incident and communications plan, Sophos has identified key areas of concern and frustration for cybersecurity and IT professionals.
