Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced the plan to build a second semiconductor fabrication plant in Kumamoto, Japan.

It has the backing of Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation, DENSO Corporation and Toyota Motor Corporation.

Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) - a subsidiary majority-owned by TSMC - plans to start construction by the end of 2024.

The facility is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2027.

According to TSMC, together with JASM’s first fab, which is scheduled to begin operation in 2024, the overall investment in JASM will exceed US$20 billion with support from the Japanese government.

The plants will together create about 3,400 skilled jobs, it added.

TSMC makes semiconductors for companies like Apple and Nvidia.
