Indian multinational conglomerate Tata Group will set up a semiconductor testing and packing plant in the Indian state of Karnataka with an investment of US$24 million (S$32 million).

The plans for the facility have been approved by the state authorities and the facility is expected to create over 150 new jobs.

The Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP) unit, will be equipped with technology to develop market-ready chipsets from raw silicon wafers. The Tata Group did not disclose with which existing Semicon manufacturer it will collaborate with to set up the facility.

India is also set to inaugurate its first ATMP factory in Gujarat being set up by the American semiconductor company Micron Technology at an investment of up to US$825 million, expected to create over 5,000 direct jobs.

It will enable assembly and test manufacturing for both DRAM and NAND products that would both address domestic and international demand. It is likely to be operational by 2024.

Tata Electronics, the newly floated entity of Tata Group, which started operations of its electronics contract manufacturing unit last year, has been manufacturing spare parts for smartphones in a plant in Tamil Nadu.

In a regulatory disclosure, the company said it has manufactured parts worth US$59.2 million so far in fiscal 2023. It is also planning to expand this plant to increase the scale of production.

Recently, Tata Group was close to an agreement to acquire Apple’s Wistron facility in Karnataka which manufactures the latest iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, along with iPhone 14 models.
