Standard Chartered Bank architecture leader exits

Standard Chartered Bank architecture leader exits

Returns to Australia for retail role.

By Ry Crozier on Jun 20, 2022 10:12AM

Standard Chartered Bank’s Nick Walker is leaving to return to Australia and join grocery retailer Coles Group.

Walker had been based in Singapore and Hong Kong over the past four years, where he held a range of architecture and technology leadership roles for Standard Chartered Bank (StanChart).

He was most recently listed as the bank’s chief architect for a year-and-a-half but was also at one point the global head of technology for Mox Bank, a Hong Kong-based “virtual bank” backed by StanChart.

“Nick joins us with a wealth of knowledge and experience built throughout his career, most recently in international banking at Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore, where he has been leading their global architecture, strategy and transformation team,” Coles Group said in a LinkedIn post.

Prior to StanChart, Walker spent almost 13 years in various technology roles at Australian ‘big four’ bank NAB, working his way up from being a programmer to eventually the head of technology for NAB’s digital operations.

Walker wrote in a LinkedIn post of his own that he felt “privileged and excited to be joining … the great team at Coles Group next month.”

“My time with Standard Chartered Bank has been nothing short of incredible thanks to the diversity of its people and clients and the many opportunities provided,” he wrote.

“Here’s to the next time we cross paths and I have the chance to work with all of the wonderful friends I’ve made across Singapore, Hong Kong and beyond.”

Walker will join Coles Group as its new general manager of strategy and architecture.

Walker’s replacement at StanChart is unclear; the bank hired Brendan Royal as its “global chief architect” in November last year.

However, it is understood by iTnews Asia that the two "chief architect" roles and movements are unrelated.

A succession plan for Walker’s former role could not be confirmed by the time of publication.
