Vietnam universities develop sea water monitoring IoT system

University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has collaborated with Vietnam National University and Ho Chi Minh University of Technology to develop a real-time sea-water monitoring system for aquaculture in Xuan Dai Bay, Vietnam.

The system uses technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, and mechatronics.

It monitors temperature, acidity, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and turbidity, providing real-time data to farmers.

This helps farmers make timely decisions and provide alerts in harsh conditions.

Phu Yen province's vice president, Le Tan Ho said the data from the real-time seawater monitoring system allows the local government to assess and better plan aquaculture and activities like tourism, which aids in better planning towards sustainable social and economic development goals.

It assists in protecting the environment and addressing climate changes, particularly in coastal areas, Ho added.

The project is funded by Aus4Innovation and is part of UTS Rapido Vietnam.

UTS' chief investigator of the project, Eryk Dutkiewicz, said aquaculture is an important industry in Vietnam, generating an income of SGD 9.6 billion (AUD$11 billion) per year.

It poses challenges to farmers, making real-time monitoring crucial for sustainable practices, Dutkiewicz added.

The research team aims to expand the application of IoT platforms for coastal water system management beyond Phú Yên.

As the solution is scalable and not site-specific, the team is seeking partners to expand implementation.
