Plans to implement microservices architecture in future.

UnionBank of the Philippines is using Red Hat OpenShift Service on Amazon Web Services (Rosa) to simplify operations, enabling its teams to act faster and develop apps with more agility and accuracy.

Rosa, a joint offering by AWS and Red Hat.

Having recently migrated applications to the cloud as part of its digital transformation journey, the bank's system engineering head Cris Tismo said at the recent AWS ASEAN summit that they chose Rosa to help teams reduce complexity and run scalable, modern applications efficiently.

"We did not want to buy something off the shelf, as most client-facing apps we build are actual game changers," she added.

UnionBank builds digital payment and cash management solutions that cater to the needs of unbanked Filipinos. It has been working on step-by-step upgrades in enhancing agility.

The bank had earlier used the OpenShift Dedicated, a hosted offering from Red Hat, Tismo said.

She noted that Rosa is a fully managed hybrid cloud enterprise Kubernetes platform that reduces complexity for IT teams that build and manage their own application platforms.

It runs natively on AWS infrastructure and uses the high availability and resiliency of the AWS cloud.

Built on open-source innovation using industry standards, Rosa supports existing and cloud-ready applications with streamlined access to AWS services, Tismo said.

It is now enabling the bank to create, deploy, and manage cloud-based applications in both self-managed and fully managed deployment options.

Shifting left

Successfully implementing DevOps, the bank moved on to adopt DevSecOps methodologies, where developers work closely with security teams and bring security considerations earlier in the development life cycle — also known as “shifting left.”

After "careful assessment" with partners and Red Hat, we have been "shifting left" in the past two-three years, she added.

Tismo said that UnionBank is undergoing some policy changes and will soon want to migrate to microservices architecture.

"We aim to collaborate with partners to align in our "shift left" goals to enable faster deployments without compromising processes and regulations," she added.
