OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, is considering building a data centre in India with at least 1 GW (gigawatt) capacity.
Bloomberg reported the company is in talks with local partners for the project.
The facility would be part of OpenAI’s Stargate infrastructure expansion in Asia.
Location and timeline details have not yet been confirmed.
CEO Sam Altman is expected to announce more during his upcoming visit to India.
The plan comes as OpenAI prepares to open its first India office in Delhi NCR later this year.
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market by user base.
Altman recently said ChatGPT adoption in the country grew fourfold in the past year, adding that the company is “excited to invest much more in India.”
The project could also align with the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to develop and deploy homegrown AI capabilities.
OpenAI has signalled interest in partnering with the Centre on “building AI for India with India.”
Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI has already registered as a legal entity in India and started building a local team.
The initiative also connects to a broader Stargate push announced in the US earlier this year, a private sector investment of up to $500 billion for AI infrastructure, funded by SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI.
