Principal Malaysia, an asset management firm has planned a major cloud transition to enhance customer experience.

This transition involves relocating 150 servers and 35 key business applications, including its Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Principal Malaysia's CEO Munirah Khairuddin said the partnership with AWS will help the firm support customers in building, protecting, and advancing their financial well-being.

She added that the company is working on full-scale data centre migration from on-premises to AWS cloud in Malaysia and ASEAN region.

Principal Malaysia is a joint venture between Principal Financial Group, a Nasdaq-listed global financial services company, and CIMB Group Holdings Berhad. It offers investment services, financial planning, fund and portfolio management, and advisory services.

It operates in 80 countries, traditionally serving SMBs and government-based retirement plans in Chile, Brazil, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and India.

Shifting to the cloud model leveraging AWS’s global infrastructure including Amazon Relational Database Service, Amazon API Gateway and Amazon Connect, Principal said it will invest in new technologies, reduce its data centre footprint, and create global business opportunities.

It expects to enhance scalability and agility, enabling them to better respond to the changing needs of their clients.

Principal Financial Group's chief information officer Kathy Kay said AWS is also helping them to provide personalised experiences, which was not possible in the past.

Recently in November 2023, the company united its IT strategy to establish the holistic data and cloud architecture necessary to elevate customer experience and better leverage AI.

It has implemented chatbots, developed machine learning models using Databricks, and is trying hands-on generative AI.

The company has also invested in Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service, with one generative AI application already in production.
