Hoya Corporation, one of the leading global manufacturers of optical products has halted some production and sales activities after a cyber attack affected its IT systems on March 29.

The company said a "system failure" caused servers at some of its production plants and business divisions to go offline.

Hoya added that it will work closely with each of its business divisions and sites, as well as with outside experts, to identify the nature and scope of the incident and to restore the situation.

"At this time, we do not have a full restoration timeline for when our systems will be back online, but our priority is restoring our systems as quickly as possible," the company said in a separate advisory.

Hoya is known for manufacturing eyeglass, contact lenses and medical endoscopes. The Japanese-based conglomerate has over 37,000 employees at 160 offices and subsidiaries in more than 30 countries.

It promptly responded to a server failure by isolating the affected servers and informing the relevant authorities in the impacted countries.

The optics company said it also hired outside forensic investigators who determined that the incident was most likely caused after an unauthorised party successfully infiltrated certain systems crucial for its business operations.

Hoya is currently investigating whether the third parties accessed any confidential or personal information stored on the compromised systems.

The investigation is likely to take "a considerable number of days," it added.

It plans to continue investigation and take measures to resume the supply system of products.

Hoya Corporation has earlier in 2019, partially shut down its production line in Thailand following a malware attack. It has suffered another attack in 2021, claimed by the Astro Team hacking group.
