GlobalFoundries inaugurated a new hub facility in Penang, Malaysia to assist global fab operations in real-time.
The new facility will create 300 high-value manufacturing support roles, including technicians, engineers and other administrative functions.
It aims to provide engineering resources through latest digital manufacturing technologies such as remote access, Industry 4.0 solutions and GF’s state-of-the-art Factory Control Tower, the company said.
The Malaysia hub will complement GF's US$4 billion (S$5.5 billion) fabrication plant opened in Singapore earlier this month and is part of a strategic network to offer "round-the-clock" support for global operations.
The new establishment is expected to enhance opportunities for cross-border initiatives and broaden the talent pool.
GF's chief manufacturing officer, Kay Chai Ang said the facility will leverage the strengths of its existing global manufacturing footprint and harmonise operations across all sites in Singapore, the US and Europe to maintain supply chain resiliency and sustainability.
GF manufactures semiconductors for a wide range of chip giants like Qualcomm, NXP, MediaTek, Bosch and Infineon. It has recently submitted applications for funding under the US CHIPS and Science ACT to expand capacity and modernise its local manufacturing facilities.
"This federal support is critical for GF to continue growing its US manufacturing footprint," senior executive Steven Grasso said in a statement.
The act provides a total of US$52.7 billion in subsidies for semiconductor production, research and workforce development. It also includes a 25 per cent investment tax credit for capital expenses for chip-making and related equipment.
