Digital Realty and Brookfield Infrastructure have announced the construction of their first data centre facility in India under their joint venture called BAM Digital Realty.

The facility is part of a campus which is designed for a maximum capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) upon full buildout and is located on a 10-acre campus in Ambattur Industrial Estate, an important industrial and manufacturing hub located close to Chennai’s city centre, airport, and other major services.

Chennai is the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu

The first phase, MAA10, on track to open later this year, will offer 20MW critical capacity to support the growing demand for digital infrastructure in India.

The joint venture designs, builds, owns, and operates high-quality, scalable data centre assets serving as a hub connecting telecom providers, customers and partners.

BAM Digital Realty’s CEO, Seema Ambastha, said the facility will serve as the connectivity hub for South Asia, providing opportunities for enterprises to scale their digital businesses and access vibrant connected data communities.

The new campus, which has "state-of-the-art" internet infrastructure has the TIA 942 Rated 3 featuring Digital Realty’s energy-efficient data centre design, “excellent” operating procedures and repeatable Pervasive Data Centre Architecture (PDx) approach.

The company said the centre will offer a full range of data centre solutions, from a single cabinet to multi-megawatt solutions, with access to an in-house platform which enables connectivity to over 4,000 participants across 27 countries.

BAM Digital Realty said it sees “significant market opportunity” in Chennai with further expansions planned across the country. The venture, earlier in 2021 said it intends to acquire land parcels in multiple metros in India for the development of data centre campuses.
