India’s Ministry of Education's (MoE) has moved its open-source national edtech platform - Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing (Diksha) to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), with the intention of lowering IT costs and making it accessible.
Diksha is a free education tech platform serving 200 million students in India.
Two Oracle PartnerNetwork members, Bharti Airtel and Trigyn Technologies will be responsible for implementing the migration project.
Diksha runs on the open-source platform Sunbird, developed by the EkStep Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation.
With the move, the Diksha database will now sit on Oracle's Mumbai region cloud platform.
Explaining the need to move, a spokesperson from India's MoE said the platform users stream 1.2 petabytes of daily text and video content, and there was a need for a cloud service provider who could handle the processing, storage and distribution of data in a variety of formats.
Improved scalability
With Oracle, Diksha has gained scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness, and can adjust capacity based on demand, the spokesperson added.
This helps deliver more content and serves students and teachers as the platform grows.
As the platform generates a huge number of logs, it runs Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana (ELK stack) for application diagnosis, performance, analytics and dashboards.
With OCI Compute VMs and OCI Storage, the platform manages workload and store application content such as PDFs, videos and webpages and performance logs.
And its microservices run on Kubernetes clusters in OCI Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) and container images are stored in OCI Container Registry.
Additionally, OCI Media Flow and OCI Media Streams help users access 1.5 million videos by processing and storing video content in the right formats and resolutions.
