Equinix will invest US$86 million to expand its fifth International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Singapore, SG5.

The SG5 expansion will add more than 1475 cabinets to meet the digital connectivity requirements of both current and new customers, Equinix’s South Asia managing director Yee May Leong, said.

This will increase SG5’s capacity to more than 2950 cabinets – with more than 83,000 square feet of colocation space, he added.

SG5 IBX is a nine-storey facility located at the Tanjong Kling data centre park.

At full capacity, SG5 is expected to offer 5000 cabinets, with a total colocation space of close to 129,000 square feet, Yee said.

He noted that in keeping with Singapore’s emphasis on energy efficiency in new data centre construction, the SG5 has been awarded the Singapore Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA) Green Mark Platinum certification for “sustainable design and practices”.

The expansion will strengthen Equinix’s cross-island presence and location diversity, with all five of Equinix’s current IBX data centres "strategically spread across the island", Yee said.

Equinix has the most network-dense data centre in Singapore that houses more than 225 international and regional networks connecting South Asia, he added.

“Our Singapore data centres are business hubs for more than 855 companies, including more than 315 enterprises,” Yee said.

Subsea cable

Equinix also announced that it has been selected by Inligo Networks to establish a cable landing station for its Asia connect cable system (ACC1) subsea cable in Singapore.

Spanning a distance of approximately 18,000 km, Inligo Networks’ ACC1 connects Southeast Asia (Singapore and Indonesia) with Australia, Timor Leste, Guam, and through Los Angeles, California in the US.

ACC1 design has been completed with construction to commence in 2022.

Yee said the Equinix data centre campus in Singapore is connected to 14 key submarine cable systems, including ACC1.
