Empowering Malaysia’s smart manufacturing journey through better data management

Manufacturing is a key growth engine for Malaysia; it contributes about a quarter or 24 percent to the nation’s economy annually. Official statistics show that manufacturing sector continues to drive output growth, expanding 7.3 percent in June 2026 and supporting the Industrial Production Index’s upward momentum.

Export-oriented industries remained the key driver, predominantly spurred by the manufacture of computer, electronics & optical products. The seasonally adjusted S&P Global Malaysia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index also recorded a third consecutive positive month in August 2026 at 50.2.

The importance of manufacturing to Malaysia is underscored in the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. The policy aims to strengthen high-tech manufacturing and services value-added share of GDP to 15 percent in 2030 from an 8.1 percent baseline. The goal is to establish at least 3,000 smart factories as part of the national strategy to drive Industry 4.0 adoption among manufacturing and manufacturing-related services companies.

Achieving this vision requires more than just adopting advanced technologies. Managing data effectively has become a critical challenge as manufacturers move toward more connected and automated operations. Production environments now generate data from multiple sources, including industrial machines, sensors, surveillance systems, and quality control platforms.

Without a reliable data management strategy, organisations may struggle with fragmented information, limited visibility, and increased operational risks. To fully leverage smart manufacturing technologies, manufacturers need an integrated approach that enables them to store, access, protect, and manage data efficiently across their entire operations.

Scaling storage for surging production data

Managing surveillance independently at every factory or branch can create fragmented monitoring environments, particularly for organisations with geographically distributed operations. Centralising surveillance management can provide security teams with a unified view across different facilities while making it easier to manage cameras, recordings and security events from one environment.

As Malaysia’s manufacturing sector embraces digital transformation, reliable data management is essential to building smarter and more resilient operations.
