Suntec City to implement IAQ sensors for energy consumption optimisation

Project is to be completed in phases by 2024.

By Kumar Gandharv on Mar 6, 2024 9:47AM

Suntec City Office Towers is installing wireless indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring sensors and gateways, and incorporating Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to optimise energy consumption while providing a comfortable workspace for tenants.

Located in the Marina Bay Precinct within Singapore’s Central Business District, it comprises five office towers, a retail and entertainment complex, and a convention and exhibition centre.

The deployment of IAQ sensors and gateways will be carried out in phases across the five towers, with Tower 4 being the first followed by Tower 2, Tower 3, Tower 1, and Tower 5.

These phased refurbishment works are expected to be completed by 2024.

APM Property Management, which manages Suntec City Towers, will be working with UnaBiz on the project to replace existing equipment to enhance the reliability of the air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV) system, and the installation of an indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring solution.

Based in Singapore, Taiwan and Japan, UnaBiz delivers end-to-end customised IoT solutions.

UnaBiz Singapore’s managing director, Jonathan Tan, said the company is working with D-Team Engineering, Actility and Milesight.

By integrating indoor IAQ monitoring with the new ACMV system, Suntec City can prioritise tenant well-being, and optimise airflow and energy consumption through data-driven ventilation, Tan added.

UnaBiz is working with D-Team Engineering and utilising Milesight IAQ sensors and gateways, with Actility ThingPark Enterprise on-premises IoT platform on a LoRaWAN network for the project.

Monitoring with 800 wireless sensors

UnaBiz said it will work with D-Team Engineering to replace the Air Handling Unit (AHU) at the plant room located adjacent to the service corridor and replace the Variable Volume Air (VAV) controller sets located within the office areas.

It added that the company will deploy nearly 800 wireless IAQ monitoring sensors and 50 LoRaWAN gateways to monitor the IAQ levels of five towers to ensure consistent IAQ standards and monitor the performance of the new ACMV systems.

APM Property Management’s senior manager of operations, Steven Kong, said a data-driven ACMV system ensures quality air for shoppers and tenants, and an energy-efficiency system helps optimise energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

Milesight’s IAQ sensor is a comprehensive 9-in-1 solution that integrates nine types of sensors to measure ambience conditions including carbon dioxide concentration, temperature, humidity, light, TVOC, barometric pressure, PM2.5, PM10, formaldehyde and motion.

The sensor provides real-time monitoring and collects IAQ data around the clock.

Actility’s APAC managing director, Alban Médici, said its QoS-based LoRaWAN IoT mediation solution will ensure reliable wireless communication towards the whole Suntec complex.
