Singapore and Malaysia sign deal to tackle telecommunication scams

Singapore and Malaysia sign deal to tackle telecommunication scams

And enhance regulatory enforcement activities.

By Abbinaya Kuzhanthaivel on Feb 26, 2024 2:59PM

Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has signed a deal to tackle scams across telecommunication channels.

The deal seeks to enhance cooperation in regulatory enforcement activities related to scams; and mutual information exchanges in areas such as regulatory frameworks, technical and policy solutions related to scam telephone calls and text messages in Singapore and Malaysia.

With the new pact, the countries aim to drive a "coordinated" regional approach to exchange strategic intelligence cross-borders, facilitate research and enhance protection.

Scam is a cross border issue requiring strong cooperation amongst countries. Both these countries have earlier collaborated in many enforcement actions against scammers.

Malaysia is therefore a key partner for Singapore in building up regional cooperation in combating scams across the telecommunications channels, IMDA said.

IMDA's chief executive Lew Chuen Hong said such international cooperation is significant to preserve trust for the digital commons, especially when addressing issues such as online scams.

Singapore has earlier entered into similar MOUs with New Zealand’s Department of Internal Affairs, United States Federal Communications Commission and Australia’s Communications and Media Authority.
