American Express expands Singapore centre of excellence

To develop generative AI tools for its global customers.

By Kumar Gandharv on Nov 14, 2023 9:27AM

American Express has announced the expansion of the Singapore Decision Science Centre of Excellence (CoE) to focus on data science applications in the areas of marketing and servicing model development and production, utilising artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

As part of the expansion, it will create a generative AI Research and Development practice focused on new AI applications for servicing, risk, and technology.

Established in 2022 with support from the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Digital Industry Singapore (DISG), the centre has been working on credit decisioning and fraud prevention use cases.

Amex’s group president of global commercial services and credit and fraud risk, Anna Marrs, said, the centre has expanded the company’s global data science and technology capabilities, to maintain credit and fraud risk results and continue the journey of AI innovation.

In the next phase, the aim is to bring the same level of innovation to marketing and servicing use cases to deliver the vision of providing the best customer experience, she added.

According to the company, it has invested nearly US$5.5 billion (S$7.49 billion) in global marketing.

Data scientists at the centre will leverage AI to optimise the customer marketing portion of the company’s spending by creating personalised and relevant experiences across digital channels, and enhancing digital servicing options and providing personalisation, it added.

Singapore EDB’s managing director, Jacqueline Poh, said the expanded centre will develop novel generative AI tools to serve a global customer base.

The company plans to hire candidates for the CoE with master's degrees or PhDs in the areas of mathematics, engineering, statistics, physics, operation research, computer science, or other equivalent technical programs for data scientist and AI/ML researcher roles.
