Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced that the new AWS Region in Malaysia will be live next year to support the Malaysian government’s Madani Economy Framework aiming to improve the living standards of all Malaysians by 2030.

Earlier, AWS announced a 25.5 billion ringgit (S$7.38 billion) investment in the new AWS Region in Malaysia by 2037.

The intent is to give developers, startups, entrepreneurs, enterprises, government, education, and nonprofit organisations the choice to run applications and serve end users from data centres located in the country, AWS said.

Partnering Malaysian businesses

Last year the Malaysian government signed a cloud framework agreement (CFA) with AWS and its partner, Radmik Solutions Sdn Bhd,

The agreement was to enable government departments and agencies would be able to access AWS cloud services through a streamlined procurement model under a new deal signed with the cloud provider.

One of the big wins for the cloud service provider was the country’s national postal and courier service provider, Pos Malaysia, closing its on-premises data centres and migrating its IT infrastructure to AWS cloud.

This has made transactions smoother with new digital, customer-centric solutions while reducing IT costs by 50 percent, the company said.

Pos Malaysia’s group chief digital and transformation officer, Sumesh Rahavendra, said migration to AWS enables the firm to focus on core operations, improve productivity, and drive profitability while delivering better customer experience.

With the new AWS Region coming to Malaysia, the company will further reduce latency and improve data compliance posture to better serve customers,” Rahavendra added.

Another major customer, Petronas, is using AWS cloud to improve and expand existing and new solutions, including SETEL, Malaysia’s first e-wallet for purchasing fuel at its stations, and STEAR, a cloud-based logistics solution and services platform built on AWS for the offshore industry, an AWS spokesperson said.

Digital image stock agency, 123RF has also launched an AI image generation service, which uses Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion’s text-to-image foundation model (FM) and Amazon SageMaker to help users generate unique, custom images from text prompts.

123RF’s chief executive officer, Alex P'ng, said users have the creative power to bring ideas to life, leading to a 20 percent increase in licensing rates for AI-generated content since launch.

This success highlights the role cloud technology plays in customers' success, P'ng added.

AWS’ country manager in Malaysia, Pete Murray, said with the launch of AWS Malaysia Region in 2024, the company will provide a stimulus to the country in its journey to be a leader in digital technology across the region, and in the process build a better future for all Malaysians.
