Nvidia partners with Reliance and Tata to advance AI in India

To support demand for local LLMs to support generative AI apps.

Indian conglomerates, Reliance Industries and Tata Communications have partnered with Nvidia to create cloud-based AI computing infrastructure and platforms for developing AI solutions.

Both entities will build and operate AI supercomputing data centres. They will enable researchers, developers, startups, scientists and AI practitioners to access accelerated computing and high-speed, secure cloud networking to run workloads safely and with energy efficiency.

According to Reliance, the collaboration will lead to the creation of a domestically developed foundation for a large language model (LLM), specifically designed to cater to the linguistic diversity of India and optimised for generative AI applications.

The focus lies on AI projects, including AI chatbots, drug discovery, and climate research, it added.

As part of the collaboration, Nvidia will provide Reliance Jio, the telecommunications arm of the Reliance Group, with AI supercomputer technologies including CPU, GPU, networking, and AI operating systems and frameworks for building advanced AI models.

Talking about the partnership with Tata, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, said data centres are shifting to GPU computing to build energy-efficient infrastructure to support the demand for generative AI.

He added that Tata will expand cloud infrastructure service with Nvidia AI supercomputing to support the demand of generative AI startups and the processing of large language models.

Tata's software consultancy arm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), will utilise the AI infrastructure and capabilities to build and process generative AI applications and upskill its 600,000-strong workforce.

Tata Sons’ chairman N. Chandrasekaran, said the partnership with Nvidia will democratise access to AI infrastructure, accelerate the build-out of AI solutions and enable the upgradation of AI talent.
