INDIAai, the national artificial intelligence (AI) portal of India has signed a pact with Facebook parent Meta to foster advancements in AI and other emerging technologies.

The portal will establish a framework to make Meta’s open-source AI models available for use by Indian AI ecosystem. It will focus to enhance accessibility to AI computing resources for researchers, startups, and organisations.

INDIAai's CEO Abhishek Singh said the joint research and development endeavours will tackle "large-scale" challenges and digital issues by leveraging technologies like Llama, a collection of foundation language models and other open-source solutions.

He added the organisation is considering launching a Centre of Excellence to nurture the startup ecosystem by leveraging Meta's AI research models like LlaMA, Massively Multilingual Speech and No Language Left Behind.

Under the pact, the partners are planning to build datasets in Indian Languages to enable translation and large language models, prioritising low-resource languages.

INDIAai said this effort will foster social inclusion, improve government service delivery, and spur innovation using large language models, generative AI, cognitive systems, and translation models.

Further, the portal aims to raise awareness about AI's potential benefits and risks among various stakeholders, including policymakers, businesses, civil society, and the general public.

"We will also work together to promote responsible AI practices through the collaborative development of comprehensive tools and guidelines," INDIAai said.
