Azul Capitalizes on Oracle's Java Licensing Controversy, Gains Market Share

Discover how Oracle's change in Java licensing rules sparked a market shift, with Azul emerging as a dominant player.

A recent change in Java licensing rules announced by Oracle in January this year has caused quite a stir in the Java user community with the consensus being that the cost of using Oracle's version of Java, one of the most popular computer programming languages in the world, would go up significantly.

A study by New Relic shows that among Java Development Kit (JDK) distributors, Oracle had roughly 75 percent of the market in 2020, but that has gone down to just 34.48 percent in 2022.

Among the companies that have benefited from this market shift away from Oracle is Azul, the only company that is 100 percent focused on Java.

Headquartered in Sunnyvale, California, Azul chalked up a significant win in May this year becoming the University of Sydney's sole provider of Java. The university moved to Azul from its long-term vendor Oracle.

iTnews Asia caught up with Azul's CEO and co-founder Scott Sellers and the University of Sydney's Vendor Management Specialist and University Software Licensing Community Executive Member, Emiliano Fisanotti, on what was special about Azul's value proposition in the crowded JDK space and why the university selected the company it for its JDK needs.
