Indonesia’s largest network provider Telkom Indonesia’s international arm, Telin, has partnered with Finnish telecom gear vendor Nokia to upgrade Indonesia Global Gateway’s (IGG) submarine network.
IGG is a 5,300 km optical submarine cable system that links up multiple cities across the Indonesian archipelago with the data centre hub of Singapore.
According to Telin, Nokia, along with systems integrator Lintas Teknologi Indonesia, have conducted a trial of fifth-generation Photonic Service Engines (PSE) super coherent optics on the IGG network.
This will increase the data carrying capacity by around 31 percent while lowering the total cost of ownership, the company said.
Nokia Indonesia’s president director, Ozgur Erzincan, said the solution is helping service providers improve spectral efficiency and increase capacity.
It has surpassed the quality standards set by Telin before the trial, Erzincan said.
Nokia and Telin recorded a capacity of 500 gigabits per second (Gbps) per channel compared to 400 Gbps of the existing equipment, the company said.
The trial has been conducted last year over a subsea cable between Jurong in Singapore and Manado in Indonesia.
Telin said Nokia PSE-V super coherent chipset, powered by a second-generation Probabilistic Constellation Shaping (PCS) technology, ensures optimal use of spectrum and helps service providers reduce cost per bit.
The trial utilised Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and repeater loading the 1830 Photonic Services Interconnect – Modular (PSI-M) compact modular platform for PSE-Vs transponder cards, further improving spectral efficiency on subsea cable systems, including repeaters, it added.
Telin offers products and services to a global customer base, delivering the global coverage of 27 submarine cables totalling over 250,000 km in length and 58 points of presence in 26 countries.
