Amazon Web Services will open an infrastructure region, comprising local data centres and three availability zones, in Thailand and invest 190 million baht (US$5 billion) over the next 15 years.
The new region means local business and government users can store data in AWS data centres in Thailand.
“The AWS Asia Pacific (Bangkok) Region will enable organisations to build with AWS technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, and Internet of Things,” AWS infrastructure services vice president Prasad Kalyanaraman said.
Thai government officials said that local AWS-run data centres would lead to broader use of AWS cloud, and this in turn would improve the availability of digital services, both those made by the private and public sectors.
The new infrastructure region “will enable customers with data residency preferences or requirements to securely store data in Thailand while providing even lower latency across the country,” the cloud provider said.
AWS said it also intended to deepen its investment in Thailand with the launch of an upcoming AWS local zone in Bangkok.”
Local zones place “compute, storage, database, and other select services closer to large population, industry, and IT centres, enabling customers to deliver applications that require single-digit millisecond latency to end users,” it said.
AWS also said it is working with universities and businesses in the country to help them develop cloud skills for students and staff, respectively.
