IMDA to cooperate with Australia on telco scams

Mutual assistance agreement reached.

Regulators in Singapore and Australia say they will cooperate “in cases of mutual concern” regarding unsolicited telemarketing, spam and scam campaigns.

The Info-communications Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) and Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) signed an agreement [pdf] on July 18.

Australia has struck similar regulatory agreements with the USA, Canada and New Zealand.

“Scams are a global issue that do not respect geographical boundaries,” IMDA chief executive Lew Chuen Hong said.

“This memorandum of understanding (MOU) is an important step for the international community to join forces and tackle this issue decisively.

“I am happy to join in this partnership with our Australian counterparts and together, the MOU will benefit the citizens of our both countries and increase trust in our telecommunication systems.”

The agreement covers terms for “strategic engagement, mutual assistance, and the exchange of information” between the two countries.

It is intended to cover only “the most serious” investigations - rather than every possible scam or spam campaign, and both countries reserve the right to decline to provide assistance, if asked.
