As part of its 5G business expansion, Samsung Electronics will supply 5G advanced technologies and network solutions to Japan’s largest mobile phone carrier, NTT Docomo. DoCoMo currently serves nearly 82 million users throughout Japan.
Samsung also revealed that both companies plan to advance their business digitalisation and continuously support high-grade wireless 5G network services. Under the business agreement, Samsung will issue its 5G solutions to DoCoMo, including its OpenRAN (open radio access network) technology.
This is Samsung's first direct provision of 5G solutions to NTT Docomo. The Korean tech giant is aiming to take market share in OpenRAN from the big three of Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia.
Samsung Electronics has been partnering with tech companies, supporting ultra-fast 5G solutions. Earlier this month, Samsung launched a studio for 5G and AI solutions in Singapore with IBM and M1.
In January, Samsung also conducted 5G standalone trials in Pilsen, in the Czech Republic, with Germany’s Deutsche Telekom. 5G SA architecture enables mobile operators to have more efficient and simple network operations, while empowering 5G networks to deliver immersive user experiences and new business models for enterprises.
