PLDT strengthens backhaul network to enhance digital connectivity

PLDT strengthens backhaul network to enhance digital connectivity

Deliver high-capacity, low-latency links across the country.

By Kumar Gandharv on Oct 28, 2025 1:38PM

Philippines’ largest integrated telco, PLDT Inc., is enhancing its domestic backhaul network to strengthen digital connectivity across the country.

The initiative will improve data transmission between the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) system and PLDT’s national backbone network.

This will enable faster and reliable services for users nationwide.

ADC is a high-capacity submarine communications cable system that connects China, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

It provides over 160 Tbps of traffic capacity, enhancing regional connectivity and supporting data-intensive applications like cloud computing, AI, and 5G.

PLDT is leveraging Ciena optical technology to enhance backhaul capacity and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of data from global cloud providers and hyperscalers.

It is using Ciena’s 6500, powered by WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optical technology.

The solution supports multi-terabit transmission and low-latency connectivity from the ADC landing station to PLDT’s national backbone.

Additionally, Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite (Navigator NCS) enhances operational efficiencies for PLDT’s network.

It does so by simplifying and accelerating network planning, provisioning, and assurance workflows.

PLDT and Smart’s senior VP and head of enterprise business group, Blums Pineda, said, “PLDT is committed to strengthening the country’s digital backbone by ensuring that the international capacity carried by the ADC system translates into world-class connectivity for users nationwide.”

“With the support of Ciena’s optical technology, we can provide faster, more resilient, and more secure services, powering the Philippines’ digital economy from individual users to enterprises and hyperscalers, Pineda added.
