South Korea’s second-largest conglomerate, SK Group and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced plans to construct South Korea’s largest AI-dedicated data centre in the Ulsan city.

The facility in Ulsan’s Mipo National Industrial Complex will house 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs).

The project will be developed in two phases.

The first phase aims to provide 41 MW by November 2027.

It will scale up to 103 MW capacity by February 2029. and SK aims to eventually expand the site to a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI hub.

SK Telecom and SK Broadband are leading the initiative, with support from other SK affiliates, including SK hynix and SK Gas.

AWS is expected to invest $4 billion in development.

The joint facility is located near SK Gas’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) combined heat and power plant, ensuring a stable energy supply.

This will also enable the use of LNG cold energy for cooling.

The 36,000-square-meter site was acquired in April from SK Chemical for 28.3 billion won ($20.8 million).

AWS currently operates a data centre in Seoul and is building another in Incheon’s Seo District.

The project comes amid growing global competition for AI computing capacity.
