Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to strengthen digitalisation

Partners Microsoft to use AI and digital twins.

By Kumar Gandharv on Aug 1, 2024 11:46AM

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins to optimise vessel route planning to enhance safety and reduce emissions in maritime operations.

The aim is to achieve just-in-time arrivals to reduce the turnaround times for vessels in port.

It has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Microsoft.

The focus lies on technologies including cloud computing, AI, data analytics, robotics, and cybersecurity to develop digital and green solutions for the maritime industry.

MPA’s assistant chief executive of operations technology, David Foo, said the collaboration with the industry is to create digital solutions and applications to address the challenges in port operations and service delivery, safe navigation of ships, cybersecurity, and sustainability.

It supports the maritime sector to innovate and reduce business costs and carbon emissions, said Foo.

MPA and Microsoft will train early adopters and upskill workers on how to use and implement these solutions in their operations.

The partnership aims to strengthen the cyber resilience of the maritime industry, supporting early detection of cyber threats and enabling timely actions.

MPA and Microsoft will co-develop digital solutions or leverage existing Microsoft products to support small and medium enterprises, focusing on demand aggregation and energy efficiency in shipping and port operations.

These solutions include using Microsoft’s digital modelling and simulation tools, and analytics capabilities, and building spatial models.

This will help inform policy and decision-making on climate risk assessment, mitigation, and adaptation measures.
