Indonesia Immigration automates border control for passengers

Indonesia Immigration has implemented an automated border control system using facial recognition technology to improve security and shorten passenger wait times.

This is being done for the international seaport at Batam Centre.

It is a busy border location between Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia, handling approximately 500,000 people annually.

The Indonesia Immigration has deployed two products from HID Global, an American manufacturer of secure identity products.

These include the HID U.Are.U Camera Identification System as the facial recognition component and the HID ATOM document reader for the automated border crossing (ABC) gate, known locally as Autogate.

Earlier, the manual process of handling identity verification was leading to long wait times for international departures and arrivals.

Passengers had to present documentation and wait to be reviewed and verified.

Director General of Immigration in Indonesia, Silmy Karim, said, “Wait queues are decreased and passengers are empowered by the fast and convenient self-service process that has them on their way in a matter of seconds.”

Passenger verification

The newly implemented passenger verification begins when an individual approaches the Autogate and places a passport on the HID ATOM document reader to scan the data.

Once confirmed, the first gate opens, and the traveller steps forward in front of the HID U.ARE.U camera to scan the face.

Once the system confirms a match between the passport photo and the passenger’s face, a second gate opens and the visitor is on their way.

The camera uses HID-patented multispectral imaging (MSI) technology with artificial intelligence (AI) for good performance in varied lighting conditions.

It includes on-device biometric processing, presentation attack detection (PAD), alongwith speed and accuracy.

On-device biometric processing includes face detection, capture, image quality checks, and liveness detection.

The system includes presentation attack detection (PAD) with passive liveness detection to prevent fraud.

This increases efficiency, shortens passenger wait times and enhance the traveller experience.
