Bangkok Airways moves on-premises ERP solutions to cloud

Bangkok Airways moves on-premises ERP solutions to cloud

For managing IT resources better.

By Kumar Gandharv on Jun 10, 2024 12:08PM

Thailand’s Bangkok Airways (BA) has moved on-premises enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions to the cloud for enhancing operational efficiency, managing IT resources better and improving system performance.

Earlier, the airline had been using the on-premises solutions from SAP to manage data for operational costs and profitability.

By moving to a cloud environment with RISE with SAP on AWS, BA began to transition its ERP architecture from a scale-out to a scale-up model.

The aim is to standardise ERP processes and data with minimal modifications and add cloud-compliant extensions and customisations as the business evolves.

It streamlines maintenance efforts, lowers costs, and improves scalability.

Bangkok Airways’ senior director, corporate IT, Monpraon Sukroongreung, said the airline can now scale up capabilities during peak periods and save on costs from efficiency.

“When we were on-premises, the productivity was not great, but now we are seeing significantly reduced processing times.”

Business-critical reports that used to take days to generate can now be completed almost instantly, said Sukroongreung.

The improved performance helps optimise IT resource mobilisation, which in turn contributes to efficient ground operations and a good experience for passengers, she added.

Since going live on the cloud in November 2023, the airline has experienced an uptick in system availability.

Batch processing for back-office operations, and workflow automation, are now centralised, providing visibility into BA’s business processes and real-time insights for data-driven decision-making.

With improved disaster recovery capability built-in, BA can reduce the risk of data loss and downtime.

This improves system performance and reliability for customers, employees, and stakeholders.

BA serves over 12 domestic destinations, seven international destinations, and owns and operates three airports.

In 2023, it carried over 4.4 million passengers.
