Chinese automaker BYD automates EV battery production line

To meet market demand.

By Kumar Gandharv on Apr 24, 2024 3:01AM

Chinese automaker BYD has integrated advanced automation solutions, departing from labour-intensive methods, to enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs and meet demand for electric vehicle batteries.

This involves deploying autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and autonomous forklifts to optimise material transport and streamline production workflows within its facility.

It has deployed US-based ForwardX Robotics' Max AMRs, including nine units of Max 1500-L Slim AMRs and six units of Apex 2000 Autonomous forklifts with 2.4-meter fork lengths.

The deployment is made across a 15,000 to 16,000 square meter area within its facility.

With the solution, line-side operators initiate material requests through handheld PDAs (personal digital assistants), triggering real-time prompts on intelligent dashboards for warehouse personnel.

Materials are then prepared and dispatched to designated workstations, where Max AMRs and Apex forklifts autonomously navigate to complete tasks.

These robotic systems interface with the factory's management system, providing comprehensive visibility and automation control throughout the production cycle.
