The Indian government will soon launch the Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre this year in partnership with business and academia, India's Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced at the All India Research Scholars’ Summit (AIRSS) 2024 on Monday.
“The crowning development, in the context of this research summit, is going to be the soon-to-be-announced Bharat Semiconductor Research Centre, which will be a global standard academia-government-private sector-start-up partnered institution,” Chandrasekhar said.
The government aims to initially co-locate the centre with the Semiconductor Complex Limited, eventually evolving into an independent entity to compete and cooperate with leading global semiconductor research organisations.
The research centre will foster a vibrant ecosystem of to top universities and colleges in India to collaborate on various research areas, from materials science to system innovation, he added.
India has recently approved three new semiconductor units, including a chip fabrication unit and two semiconductor ATMP (assembly, testing, marking, and packaging) units at a US$15 billion (S$20.19 billion) investment.
The country is also offering opportunities for Dutch companies to invest and examine chances for collaborative research and development (R&D) efforts, as per a new report by the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) and the Netherlands Innovation Network.
The report articulates the potential areas of opportunities in the industry, academics, research, startup ecosystems and technology transfers in fostering focused collaborations between the countries.
