ST Telemedia Global Data Centres India, one of the oldest and largest data centre operators in India has unveiled plans to expand its operational capacity in Tamil Nadu with a US$228 million (S$307 million) investment.

The company currently has close to 45 MW of operational capacity in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and is set to further invest in the state as part of its strategic expansion.

The new agreement with the state government aims to create additional data centre capacity of up to 80 MW critical IT load over the next five to seven years.

STT GDC said this expansion will be executed in multiple phases across suitable locations in the state.

The company's Chennai data centre network, which currently encompasses three facilities, will undergo expansion as part of this initiative.

Notably, the STT Chennai 2 facility, situated in the Ambattur campus, stands out as one of the country's largest operational data centres with an impressive 25 MW critical IT load capacity.

The Ambattur Campus is equipped with the highest levels of redundancy, carrier neutrality, scalable design and the ability to provide uninterrupted business operations for its customers across sectors.

The facility is AI infrastructure ready to support very high-density power requirements as well as liquid cooling where required.

Earlier this month, STT GDC began construction of its third data centre campus in Chennai.

It comprises two data centres totalling 50MW IT load. The first 8MW phase of the first building is due to be operational by September 2025.

STT GDC India CEO Sumit Mukhija said the firm continues to "enhance pan-India portfolio and add more than 250MW of IT load capacity over the next three to five years to support the thriving digital ecosystem in the country."
