Nanyang Technological University, (NTU), is partnering with OceanBase to explore technology innovations in enhancing database system performance and advancing green computing practices.
The agreement will support advanced research on the optimisation of databases focussing on improving the performance of parameterised queries.
Parameterised queries, widely used in database systems, are a kind of data-intensive computing tasks that typically require substantial computing resources and energy.
Researchers from both institutions will investigate the application of innovative technologies to resolve performance bottlenecks associated with these queries, including the development of new algorithms.
It will also involve leveraging ML to generate near-optimal cache plan sets and forecasting the effects of subtle parameter changes on query plan efficacy to identify the optimal option.
NTU said database researchers are continuously exploring optimisation strategies to reduce CPU and memory consumption, shorten query times and further enhance the overall performance of database systems.
"Although machine learning (ML) technologies have been applied to parameterised queries, the current methods face limitations when dealing with complex queries," it added.
To address this technical challenge, the partners would initiate collaborative research on "Learning to Rank for Parametric Query Optimisation" based on a hybrid database - OceanBase 4.0 Paetica.
Paetica enables adaptive configuration of the database providing efficiency and economy.
Prof. Cong Gao, principal investigator of the project and a tenured professor at NTU Singapore said the incorporation of ML technologies into database systems offers a "significant" opportunity to overcome the performance constraints, enhancing efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
OceanBase CTO Yang Chuanhui hopes the university-industry collaborated research will hasten advancements in this area and reveal more opportunities.
