Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) has finalised a deal to sell its portfolio of data centres and edge sites to data centre enterprise BDx Indonesia for US$170 million (S$226 million).

The portfolio covers 10 sites in Jakarta, Surabaya, Batam, Medan, Makassar, Bandung and Semarang connected to six domestic and five international subsea cables.

IOH's president, director and CEO, Vikram Sinha, said the transaction “underscores their dedication to building a sustainable business and propelling Indosat’s evolution from telco to tech co."

BDx Indonesia is a joint venture between IOH, BDx Data Centres (BDx), and Lintasarta, an IT solutions firm established in May 2022. It currently operates data centres in Hong Kong, Singapore, and mainland China.

The transaction will give BDx Indonesia more than 150MW of total capacity. A new 15MW facility is also being built near Jakarta.

The company said carrier-neutral edge sites on all main islands of Indonesia are also in development, with plans to be built according to eco-friendly design specifications.

BDx’s CEO Mayank Srivastava said, “We are the foremost carrier-neutral data centre provider in the country and, with the expanded portfolio, are set to emerge as Indonesia’s preferred partner for digitalisation."

Loans from three banks

BDx Indonesia is securing loans from three local banks to fund the acquisition.

The new portfolio is expected to enhance its ecosystem, facilitating interconnection between enterprises, cloud providers, content delivery networks and digital finance companies.

The company has already upgraded four data centres in Jakarta and West Java that were transferred in 2022, with one site ready for high-density AI workloads powered by green hydropower and equipped with sustainable liquid cooling technology.

Most sites have a "significant" expansion potential in existing buildings and adjacent land parcels, and the Batam site would be developed to cater for spillover demand from Singapore.
