Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has established a team including the country’s top telecom players - Viettel, VNPT and MobiFone - to develop 6G mobile telephony equipment.

Last year, the ministry set up a steering committee to propose a roadmap for research, production and commercialisation of 6G equipment and services; and solutions to support enterprises in manufacturing and commercialising 6G equipment and services.

Authority of Information Technology and Communications Industry’s deputy director, Nguyen Thien Nghia, will lead the team with a focus on reviewing the system of legal documents to promote the development, evaluation and test of 6G equipment.

A Viettel spokesperson said the company has embarked on researching the manufacture of 6G equipment and obtaining patents.

The team will propose regulations on the management, assessment, inspection and testing of the equipment to promote the deployment of the 6G network.

It will monitor the 6G equipment research and development in the world, including equipment type, supportive band, price, and standardisation, and have international cooperation in research and development of 6G technology and equipment.

According to MIC, humans and machines will be the main subjects of 6G networks with advanced services, including augmented reality, high-precision mobile holograms and digital replicas.

With the 6G standard and commercialisation expected to start in 2028, intelligent traffic with control systems, autonomous vehicles, and flying taxis can be deployed based on 6G network technology, MIC said.
