US-based semiconductor company, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced plans to invest US$400 million (S$533 million) in India over the next five years, which includes the company’s largest semiconductor design centre.

The new campus will be built in Bangalore, the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka.

According to the company, the 500,000-square-foot Bangalore campus is expected to open before the end of this year.

With over 6,500 employees in India, AMD has increased its footprint to 10 locations across Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

AMD’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, Mark Papermaster, said the company has one of the industry’s broadest product portfolios, fueled by growth in artificial intelligence, networking and 6G communications, and the India teams "will deliver the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support customers worldwide".

He added that the investment and expansion in Bangalore will support the India Semiconductor Mission.

The planned investment will add 3,000 new engineering roles by the end of 2028, the company said.
