Japanese IT services provider NTT has launched a hyperscale data centre in Chennai the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The facility will have a total capacity of 34.8 MW and will be the company's second facility in the city.
Indian media reports say that NTT will be investing US$300 million (S$405 million) in the facility.
NTT said the new campus, Chennai 2 is spread across six acres and will comprise two buildings - A and B, each offering a maximum IT load of 17.4MW.
The company's first facility - Chennai 2A became operational recently.
According to NTT, the Chennai 2 data centre will connect with NTT's MIST subsea cable.
MIST (Myanmar/Malaysia India Singapore Transit) is a 200 terabytes per second (Tbps), 12-fibre pair submarine cable connecting Chennai and Mumbai in India with Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar and Thailand.
This connectivity will transform Chennai into a digital gateway, connecting India to Southeast Asia and the world, NTT said.
With Chennai 2, NTT’s data centre footprint in the country has grown to 16 facilities and 205 MW of IT power.
NTT said the projects will address the demand for high-quality data centre infrastructure for the city’s growing digital ecosystem.
It also positions the city as a disaster recovery (DR) site for enterprises with primary IT infrastructure in other Indian cities, it added.
Chennai’s strategic location will help leverage its global connectivity to offer data centre capacity to markets in Southeast Asia like Singapore where capacity is in short supply, NTT said.
