Digital Realty’s Japanese joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation, MC Digital Realty (MCDR), has opened the fourth building on its 23,000 square metre Osaka data centre campus.

The new build, called KIX13, is a three-story facility that offers up to 21 MW of IT capacity and brings the 50:50 joint venture’s total capacity at the campus to more than 70 MW.

Digital Realty’s managing director and head of Asia Pacific, Serene Nah, said KIX13 not only expands MCDR’s Osaka footprint but also extends the reach of Digital Realty’s data centre platform to “help customers in Japan and globally mitigate the challenges of data gravity”.

MC Digital Realty’s Representative Director and CEO, Bampo Tezuka, said the Osaka campus offers “flexible scalability, robust power supply capacity suitable for high load servers and stringent security compliant with international standards”.

Along with colocation services for enterprises offered within the same campus, he added the plan is to further extend Digital Realty’s PlatformDIGITAL to offer customers the global data centre platform to support digital transformation needs.

With the transition of Japanese enterprises to the cloud, cloud service providers are increasing their footprint in Tokyo and Osaka.

The company said that this serves consumer and enterprise demand for cloud services, thereby driving the growth of Japan’s data centre market.

Further, Japan’s national digital transformation initiative, internet usage, and the advent of 5G have seen demand for online gaming, streaming and fintech services soar, adding to the need for institutional quality infrastructure solutions.
