The government authorities in Phuket are partnering with telecom operator, True Corporation, to leverage on 5G networks and solutions to facilitate the country’s resumption of international tourism.

The partnership will support Phuket’s development into a smart city and boost smart tourist journeys as the world transitions to the endemic phase of the pandemic and countries across Asia have announced plans to loosen travel restrictions on inbound tourists.

5G pilot solutions are currently being carried out at Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket and Chalong Pier. Innovations include a 5G robot to provide contactless food delivery and a smart QR code that will allow guests to arrange for services via their mobile phones.

Over at Chalong Pier, True Corporation is working with Yakko, a tourism management platform, to streamline verification and self-check in processes to reduce congestion. A cashless payment service has also been developed to reduce physical contact.

Thailand is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and tourism is a major contribution to the country’s economy and employment rates. The Governor of Phuket noted that the partnership will bring about solutions that will build confidence among local and international tourists and enhance the tourism industry nationwide.
