Philippines’ Bank of Makati (BMI) has enhanced operational efficiency to gain visibility into performance metrics, enabling data-driven decisions across units, particularly in collection management and portfolio analysis.

It aims to leverage its large data resources to understand customer behaviours and preferences and identify opportunities for product development.

Founded in 1956 as a rural bank, BMI currently operates as a savings bank, with a focus on motorcycle loans, which constitute 80 percent of the bank’s portfolio.

BMI’s president, Luis M. Chua told iTnews Asia the bank is using the Qlik Sense application, employed by the collection group to analyse employee performance and streamline workflow processes.

The workflows within the Qlik dashboards enable efficient, time-saving analysis, contributing to BMI’s 20 percent improvement in loan collections, said Chua.

The team is planning to add the Qlik NPrinting solution, catering to the increased demand for reporting tools, he added.

Currently, Qlik Sense is used for loan management, collections, and credit lending.

BMI’s head of IT, Mario de Guia, said, earlier the bank used to utilise data for functions including storing customer and transaction records, and for accounting and reporting purposes.

“The reliance on spreadsheets for data analysis and decision-making persisted, reflecting the reliance on manual processes.”

As the organisation grew, the complexity of operations increased, necessitating a shift towards advanced analytical techniques, said Guia.

Employee performance evaluation

BMI evaluated alternative software options, including Tableau and Power BI, and decided to choose Qlik after exploring its capabilities through a freely downloadable version – Qlik View.

As BMI's business model focuses on financing motorcycle purchases, once applications are processed through the loan system, the next steps involve credit investigation and collection.

The collection workflow helps in understanding workload management, performance assessment, and portfolio impact.

Chua said Qlik Sense enables analytics on individual, team, area, and regional levels, helping in efficient workload management and performance evaluation.

It helps in analysing account performance post-lending and identifying factors contributing to account default, he added.

According to Guia, the next step involves leveraging the insights from collection analytics to enhance operations and integrate Qlik analytics with geographical data to develop customer profiles.

This integration will enable customers to refine the credit decision-making process by assigning higher scores based on the insights derived from collection data analysed through Qlik, Guia added.

Internally, the bank is working on a project to develop a bank-wide dashboard that provides visibility to employees.

BMI is in a transitional phase towards a hybrid cloud environment, with plans to migrate its operations to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“While certain aspects, particularly related to deposits, will remain on-premise for the time being, the bank is actively moving other functions to the cloud,” said Guia.
