The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) have signed a pact to enhance cooperation in tackling scam and spam communications.

With scam calls becoming global nuisance, both the countries said they recognise the importance of developing a "global and coordinated" approach to address these threats and for different stakeholders to work together.

The partners aim to strengthen information exchanges, such as scam trends, regulatory and technological solutions, public education to collaborate in projects towards anti-scam measures.

DIA's chief executive Paul James said the association will facilitate research, knowledge and understanding of both countries’ legal and enforcement approaches, and to provide investigative assistance in relevant cases.

The new initiative is one of the broader international approach to work with overseas regulators to better combat scams coming through communication channels such as calls and SMSs, IMDA said in a release.

IMDA's deputy chief executive Aileen Chia said Singapore is now taking proactive measures to protect its citizens and will continue through international partnerships.
