South Korean reinsurance firm Korean Re, one of the world's top-10 reinsurance companies, has moved its IT systems and workloads to the public cloud with the help of IT infrastructure services provider Kyndryl.

The migration took 20 months to complete, and has increased the efficiency of its IT operations, improved business processing performance, and secured agile business responsiveness based on digital capabilities, a Korean Re spokesperson said.

The company has migrated its core business system to a hybrid multi-cloud in order to operate in an integrated environment. It is now using cloud-based open-source databases including AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS Redshift.

The company has also established a DevOps system to automate and optimise application development in Atlassian and GitLab environments, thereby helping in the deployment, monitoring, and rapid improvement of specific applications.

Kyndryl has also helped the company to establish a non-disruptive disaster recovery system by leveraging AWS multi-zone configuration and utilising backup and recovery functions.

This has provided stable and rapid data resiliency to meet the high-level demands of the financial business, the company said.

Prior to this migration, the Korean Re was operating its core business system on its own data centre, with only some business units using various cloud vendors.

Korean Re said the cloud migration has improved performance, interoperability, and compatibility by updating the UI of infrastructure applications to a html5-based environment.

Kyndryl Korea’s managing director, JuBock Ryu, said the cloud migration project is a first for the Korean financial sector.

Established in 1963 as a state-owned company, the Korean Re has offices in Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
