KDDI Corporation modernises mobile payment, loyalty services with Oracle

Develops new services and applications faster.

Japan’s leading telecommunications carrier KDDI Corporation is modernising its online payment brand au PAY with Oracle Database.

The company said its au Pay payment processing is now “five times” faster and it has been able to enhance the performance of its customer loyalty program au Ponta Points Program as well.

KDDI Corporation’s general manager for DX Architect Department, Nobuaki Kamada said Oracle helped KDDI meet changing customer needs by enabling it to develop new services and applications 30 percent faster.

“au PAY and au Ponta Points Program are services that must be available 24/7,  so we decided to redesign and build our IT architecture,” he added.

au PAY has approximately 31 million customers and the au Ponta Points Program is one of Japan’s most popular customer loyalty systems. Both services are said to have enhanced mobile payment experiences among Japanese consumers.

To handle the increasing volume of data and transactions, KDDI urgently needed to update its system infrastructure. It selected Oracle Database for its proven reliability, scalability, and security, the company said..

“Oracle Database provides a data platform for KDDI’s Java application development resources. This allows us to reduce application release times by more than half without any downtime,” Kamada said.

To modernise the system infrastructure for the services, KDDI has deployed Oracle Real Application Clusters that allow customers to run a single Oracle Database across multiple servers to maximise availability and enable horizontal scalability while accessing shared storage.

In addition, Oracle GoldenGate, a managed service that provides a real-time data mesh platform has enabled smooth data migration and synchronisation for KDDI, supporting third-party databases to avoid any downtime. The full migration was completed within a year, he added.

KDDI also uses Oracle Data Guard, a service that helps to achieve high performance along with data protection and disaster recovery. It also has Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) in place to build au Ponta Points Program’s disaster recovery system.

For au PAY, KDDI uses OCI to integrate internal and external processes. The company uses OCI, along with Oracle Autonomous Database to store transaction settlement details and analyse data.

KDDI said it further plans to secure operation and improve management of its mission-critical data infrastructure, on-premises and in the cloud with Oracle.
