Shopee parent Sea commits to investments in Malaysia

Shopee parent Sea commits to investments in Malaysia

To create 2,000 jobs with warehouse, and cloud computing projects.

Shopee parent, Sea Ltd, is planning major investments in Malaysia, including setting up cloud computing services, data hosting and processing, and a new logistics e-commerce warehouse.

This is expected to create over 2,000 jobs mainly through two investments - the cloud computing project and the warehouse for Shopee.

The company shared its plans with the Malaysian International Trade and Industry (MITI) Minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, during his visit to Sea headquarters in Singapore.

The Minister said the investment in the cloud computing project and warehouse would help “upskill human capital” and improve productivity.

“We are also expecting positive spillover effects for our small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), corporates and the surrounding local communities. This includes local sourcing, vendor development and strengthening the local industrial ecosystem, particularly in the digital space,” he added.

The cloud computing project will be located in a three-story facility in Kulai district in Johor and is targeted to be completed by the first quarter of 2024, said MITI.

Shopee’s newly-constructed mega warehouse will be located at Bukit Raja, Klang.

The two-storey, 1.4-million-square-foot warehouse is an integrated hi-tech logistics park with cloud infrastructure, MITI added.

Sea’s Co-founder and Group Chief Operating Officer, Ye Gang, praised the support provided by MITI for its “expansion plans and business strategies”.

To date, Singapore is the second largest investor in the manufacturing sector in Malaysia, with a total of 3,475 manufacturing projects in operation with investment amounting to RM 96.36 billion (S$30 billion), said MITI.
