SMRT Corporation finds new CISO

SMRT Corporation finds new CISO

Taps ex-gov agency IT security executive.

SMRT Corporation, Singapore’s public transport operator, has appointed Huang Shao Fei as its chief information security officer.

Huang acknowledged the appointment in a brief LinkedIn post, writing that he was “happy to share” news of the change.

He was most recently a principal security architect with Amazon Web Services, and a longtime IT executive with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), where he held roles including CISO, director of cyber security and director of data science, among others.

Huang is also a fellow of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS).

His appointment was confirmed to iTnews Asia in a statement from SMRT Corporation's group chief human resources officer, Ms Tan Ai Ling.

"Mr Huang Shao Fei joined SMRT as chief information security officer on June 20, 2022.

"Reporting to chief digital transformation officer, Mr Tan Peng Kuan, Mr Huang brings with him a wealth of experience in the field of cyber security.

"Among other duties, he has been tasked to enforce and strengthen the extensive cyber security systems that have been in place in SMRT and regularly assessed."

Huang appears to be the permanent replacement for Nigel Tan, whose LinkedIn shows he left the CISO role at SMRT earlier this year, after six years. Tan is currently listed as the CISO for IT services provider NCS Group.

SMRT's spokesperson did not respond to questions on the succession of the CISO role, nor whether someone had been acting as CISO since Nigel Tan left.

Huang featured in iTnews Asia back in March, expressing an opinion that Singapore firms need to elevate cyber security and align it more closely with business strategy instead of perceiving it to be a “technology problem” and addressing it as such.
