The Walt Disney Company is selecting Amazon Web Services (AWS) for the global rollout of its online streaming video service, Disney+.

Prior to this services expansion, the Walt Disney Company had previously used AWS as its preferred public cloud infrastructure provider to support the growth of Disney+.

Since November 2019, the Disney+ platform, which launched in Singapore last February, has already amassed 100 million subscribers. Singapore is the first market globally to launch Disney+ with all six content brands.

Using AWS’ infrastructure, the Walt Disney Company is launching Disney+ to 59 countries across North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America.

“Disney+ has completely reinvented what’s possible in content delivery by challenging convention and using cloud technology to build a streaming product from scratch that had never been launched and marketed before on such a global scale,” said Joe Inzerillo, executive vice president & CTO of direct-to-consumer at The Walt Disney Company.

“AWS has been our preferred cloud provider for years, and its proven global infrastructure and expansive suite of services has contributed meaningfully to the incredible success of Disney+.”

This latest announcement will see Disney+ is expand its use of AWS’ services to include more than 50 technologies, such as machine learning, database, storage, content delivery, serverless, and analytics.

Disney+ already uses Amazon Kinesis - a service that enables the easy collection, processing and real-time analysis and streaming of data, as well as Amazon DynamoDB - AWS’ key-value database that delivers single-digit millisecond performance at any scale with built-in encryption and data recovery - to consume content, metadata, and billions of customer actions each day.

Disney+ also uses Amazon Timestream AWS’ serverless, time-series database built for large scale consumption, storage, and real-time querying of times-series data in order to monitor the efficacy of their streaming platform.
