Stand tall Asia! As of January 2021, three Asian countries – Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand – are the leading countries with the fastest broadband download speeds.
In a ranking of 176 countries, Singapore is the nation with the fastest download speed of 247 Mbps, followed by Hong Kong at 229 Mbps and Thailand at 220 Mbps, based on the latest report from Ookla, a company that specialises in Internet speed testing.
Thailand, incidentally, was tops in December 2020, with Singapore and Hong Kong behind.
Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand are the only Asian countries in the ranking of the Top 10 countries. Romania was fourth at 198 Mbps at 190 Mbps and Denmark fifth. The average global fixed broadband download speed was 96.98 Mbps.
However, if one looks at mobile download speeds, the tables are turned with the United Arab Emirates leading at 183 Mbps, South Korea second at 171 Mbps and Qatar third at 170 Mbps. The average global mobile broadband download speed was 46 Mbps.
Singapore falls precipitously to 22nd place at 66 Mbps and Hong Kong to 19th place at 70 Mbps for mobile downloads.
Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world on a monthly basis. Data for the index comes from hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest tools every month.
To date, Ookla has seen more than 34 billion consumers taking the tests since it started in 2006.
