Singapore Press Holdings modernises wireless networks in digital transformation drive

Media organisation Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) is upgrading its wireless networks to support 4,000 employees daily as part of its active digital transformational efforts.

The network modernisation will provide flexible Wi-Fi coverage for its over 150,000-square metre campus through wireless local area network solutions by Aruba.

It will also create operational efficiencies and bolster security across thousands of users and devices from a single management pane, providing full visibility into the network.

In a joint statement by SPH and Aruba, both companies said the network modernisation will create operational efficiencies and bolster security across thousands of users and devices from a single management pane and provide full visibility into the SPH network.

“The pandemic accelerated the agenda to strengthen our technological foundations, so we can improve work quality and streamline processes with an enhanced network infrastructure,” said SPH chief technology officer Glen Francis. “Mobility and agility will be key driving forces in the evolving ‘anywhere’ office.”

Aruba was selected to help SPH create a better-connected workplace that provides connectivity, speed and security at scale for its employees amidst the need for robust network management.

Aruba Airwave and UXI sensors were deployed to visualise aging wired and wireless networks and to identify the causes of connectivity issues and improve the user experience.

After initial deployment phase and connectivity issues were resolved, the Aruba access point, Aruba Mobility Master and controller will be deployed on top of the first deployed Aruba UXI sensor for Wi-fi coverage across the premises.

For SPH, on-premise roaming will provide a significant improvement over previous coverage, with Wi-Fi bandwidth provisioning doubled from 64Mbps to 128Mbps. In addition, the network is now able to reliably connect up to four times as many devices and manage devices better while maintaining power efficiency.

“In the digital-first reality, new business outcomes and dynamic customer experiences are only possible if there is a secure, automated and intelligent network infrastructure supporting it,” said Aruba senior director Justin Chiah.

“Beyond simply connecting remote workers to the cloud, how users and the Internet of Things are connected will be a key area of focus to improve business outcomes, while enriching employee experiences.”
